After nearly two thousand years, this letter, like the rest of the Bible, has resisted the test of time, and it only shines with urgent topicality today. Paul, the slave of Jesus Christ, had an intention to visit the Christians in Rome. For several reasons it was not possible and therefore he wrote to them a letter ... a remarkable letter. This letter explains the main doctrines of what he calls the Good News. The letter to the Romans would later become the fundamental document of the Christian doctrine. Extract: The apostle Paul is busy to erect a tower building in his letter to the Romans ... not a double storey, but a giant skyscraper reaching into the heavens. We can say that when he reached the last verses of chapter 11, he reached the climax of this monumental venture ... Where he exclaims: o Depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and unseen his ways! For out of Him and through Him and to Him are all things. His is the glory forever (Romeine 11: 33,36). Then the apostle stood at the top and the view breathes away. But as you know, such a tall building is not simply erected without digging its foundations deeply ... and the higher you want to go, The deeper you have to go down. So, if you were of the opinion that the Holy Spirit would be satisfied to suffice in the general characterization of man in chapter one, then you are wrong. If we thought, that truth suppressive man which was surrendered three times by God in chapter one, now exposed to its hardy soil, then we are wrong. If we are convinced, that there is no better summary for the cause and the result of man's misery is not ... than what we have read in chapter one so far, then we are wrong ... Syne is die heerlikheid tot in ewigheid (Romeine 11:33,36). Dan staan die apostel heel bo en die uitsig slaan sy asem weg. Maar soos u self weet, word so ‘n hoë gebou nie sommer opgerig sonder dat jy sy fondasies diep uitgrawe nie ... en hoe hoër jy wil gaan, hoe dieper moet jy eers na onder gaan. So, as u miskien van mening was dat die Heilige Gees tevrede sou wees om te volstaan by die algemene tipering van die mens in hoofstuk een, dan is u verkeerd. As ons gedink het, dat die waarheid onderdrukkende mens wat drie maal deur God in hoofstuk een oorgegee is, nou tot op sy klipharde bodem ontbloot is, dan is ons verkeerd. As ons oortuig is, dat daar nie ‘n beter opsomming vir die oorsaak en die gevolg van die mens se ellende is nie ... as dit wat ons tot dusver in hoofstuk een gelees het, dan is ons verkeerd ...
