How to sing of Christ/Hoe sing ons van Christus?

Preek Kolossense 3 Heidelbergse Kategismus - Woorde uit sy Woning

The Lord calls us to sing the Psalms. In both the letters to the Ephesians and Colossians we read this. In both these letters the Book of Psalms is called with different names: sometimes Psalms, but then also as in Psalm 65, the psalms are called hymns or as with the pilgrimage songs it is known as a song ... The Psalms are God's songs of praise. The Psalms are spiritual songs, in other words: It is songs inspired by the Spirit of Christ. No man-made song can claim that it was inspired by the Holy Spirit. No man-made song can claim that it was inspired by the Holy Spirit. That was also the conclusion of the men of the Reformation, that began 500 years ago in 1517. John Calvin wrote in those years: Wherever we look, we will find no better songs than David's Psalms. The Holy Spirit spoke to David the words thereof and when we sing the Psalms, can we be sure that we sing God's very own words. The Psalms is the Songbook written by Christ about Christ. Let it dwell in you full richly! That's the Apostle Paul's command to the Colossians. That's also our mission and purpose with our regular catechism sermon. How will it dwell richly in us? It will live richly in us if we teach one another, teach and exhort with God's Psalms, and then of course, if we also sing those Psalms heartily ... singing with gratitude to the Lord. In the parallel passage from Ephesians 5 we read that we must be filled with the Spirit ... Christ's Spirit. How would it be possible to do this? To speak the words of the Psalms. To share it with one another. If you want the Spirit of Christ to fill you, if you want to know Christ's love fully, don't just sing Christ's Psalms, but also talk about it, you must also teach one another from the Psalms ...
