This what the apostle Paul also expects of us: that we would rather be quiet. He asks whether Christians have any priority? Are we any better than the others? In the preceding verses he has already sketched the position of the pagans. They are under the wrath of God. The status of the Jews will not help them either. The covenant people are also under the wrath of God. In our Scripture tonight the apostle is asking the question of the Christians in Rome and he also asks us tonight: Do we, we who read this letter, we gathered here tonight, do we have any priority? Our Scripture comes with a crushing answer: No! Nobody has any priority. Not even one! The whole world is accountable to God. All humanity ... all will die and will appear before the throne of God. Literally every mouth should be stopped. God is sitting on the throne. There is darkness around his majesty. In the prophecy of Habakkuk, the prophet says: The LORD is in his holy temple ... Keep silent before Him, all the earth! Be quiet! Hold your mouth ... like the guilty accused in court ... when the judge summarizes his findings and when the convicted person must hear the sentence ...
